Frustrated with your job? Colonel Sanders’ story shows that it’s never too late to start a successful career. Sanders started working very early. In 1902, when he was 12, his mother re-married. Sadly, the stepfather disliked the children and treated them badly. So, Sanders decided to escape and find a job. He didn’t have to travel to a big city or a different state. He found a job on a farm – just 8 miles away from his home. The job paid $15 a month and gave him a place to sleep. Sanders worked on the farm and went to school at the same time. However, he had problems with studying, especially with Maths. So, when he was 15, he decided to leave school and continued working on the farm.

At the age of 16, Sanders changed his mind. He no longer wanted to be a farmer. He dreamt of becoming a soldier. So, in 1906, Sanders joined the US Army. He was sent to Cuba, where he served for several months. However, he soon changed his mind again. After serving just one year in the army, he decided to quit. So, how is it possible that Sanders became a colonel? Of course, he wasn’t promoted to the rank just after a year of service. Surprisingly, it happened almost 30 years later. In 1935, two Kentucky governors gave him the honorary title of colonel. So it’s not a myth. The legendary Colonel Sanders really was a colonel.

Once he left the army, Sanders found a job at a railway station. During this time, he was taking courses in law. With time, he became a lawyer. However, his legal career was very short. Why? Sanders got into a fight with his own client. After this incident, Sanders was arrested by the police. He didn’t go to jail, but he couldn’t work as a lawyer anymore. Losing a job would depress most people. But not Colonel Sanders. He simply began looking for a new profession. At first, he tried selling insurance. Then, he started a boat company, but unfortunately it went bankrupt. Surprisingly, his successes came during the Great Depression. At that time, he started working at a Shell petrol station. When Sanders worked there, he cooked for his family in a back room, and started selling meals to travellers. People loved his food so much that he soon decided to open his own restaurant. That’s how KFC was born. The rest is history. So, never give up on your dreams. Remember that Colonel Sanders built one of the biggest food companies in the world at the age of 65.

I am a Londoner and a history teacher. I always thought that I knew as much about the capital city of the UK as professional guides. But I was wrong. Last year, when my friends Sheila and Maggie visited me for a summer weekend, I realised I had little to offer them. Where could I take them? I couldn’t show them Buckingham Palace for the hundredth time! I knew so little about London’s less famous attractions. So, I did my homework and, this time, I showed my friends two places that you won’t find in a guidebook.

At the beginning, I took Sheila and Maggie to two houses at 23 and 24 Leinster Gardens. When you first look at these buildings, you don’t notice anything special about them. But look again! The Leinster Houses aren’t buildings at all. They are just facades! However, they look very realistic and are identical to the buildings next to them. Sheila and Maggie also thought they were real, so they just passed them by. I had to stop them and tell them that this was the attraction we came to see. They were really surprised.

Later I learnt that the place has quite an interesting history. In the 1930s, some tourists bought tickets to a ball in the Leinster Houses. When they arrived at Leinster Gardens, they discovered that there were no buildings (and no party either) there. The organisers had lied, and the whole thing was a trick! The tourists were really angry as they’d lost their time and money. Well, I would be too!

The other place I took my friends to was… Tower Bridge. Not an unusual attraction – I agree. It is one of the most popular spots in London. But few people know that there are secret rooms under the bridge’s towers. They are called Bascule Chambers and you can visit them as part of a Tower Bridge Behind the Scenes tour. It costs a lot – we paid £50 each – but it was worth it. We were lucky enough to hear a classical music concert in the chambers. It was fantastic!

What about you? Would you like to visit these two places one day?

The San Francisco Cosplay Festival is an ideal event for science fiction lovers who enjoy dressing up as characters from their favourite movies or computer games. It takes place every year at Peace Plaza 1610 Geary Boulevard. The date of the festival is usually in July, but sometimes the event takes place in August, so check the event's official website regularly. The date will appear there soon.

The festival-goers have a great time at the event. They can get on stage and sing or dance in their amazing costumes. Actors from famous science fiction movies are often present there. They are prepared to give out autographs and pose for selfies, so make sure your phone camera is always ready. Professional photographers are also there to take photos and, surprisingly, they offer their services for free. And I’m sure you’ll want lots of photos with all the colourful characters that you meet there. Most people at the festival look absolutely fantastic in their costumes, but dressing up is not a must. You don’t have to wear a costume if you don’t want to.
