Re: Accommodation
To: Ellie Crest
Subject: Surfing Holiday

Hi Ellie, I’m so pleased you can come surfing in August! Paul, Rose and Kevin are coming too, so there will be five of us. We’ve decided to return to New Sands for a couple of days, because the surf board hire is so cheap there. Unfortunately, Paul and Rose have booked another holiday in August so we can’t spend the whole week there as we did last year.
I’m starting to think about accommodation. We won’t camp again after last year! I hated staying in a tent in all that rain!
Kevin wants to hire a caravan. There are some nice ones with 3 bedrooms, showers and cooking facilities. The problem is that none of the caravan parks take short bookings in the summer. The minimum stay is a week. It’s a shame because there are several nice parks near the beach.
There are a few guest houses in New Sands. Some have triple rooms, so we only need to book two rooms. They are not very expensive but the standard is not very high. There is only basic furniture but luckily there is a bathroom in each room. Still we would have to share the kitchen with other people. If we choose that option, we’ll have to book soon, because many guest houses are already full. The hotels in New Sands are too expensive, although I’d love to stay at the Sunrise Pavilion with its large pool!
The final option is to rent a cottage. I found one. It has three bedrooms – a double, a single and a twin, so two of us would have to share a bed! There’s a big kitchen with a microwave, washing machine and dishwasher. The living room has a TV and DVD player. There’s just one bathroom, but there’s a separate WC. There’s a nice garden too. The problem is that it’s 5 miles from the beach.
Let me know which option you prefer.

Cheers, Natalie

Egyptian archaeologists said on Wednesday that they have identified a mummy discovered in 1903. The mummy is of Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt’s most powerful female pharaoh. The mummy was originally found in the Valley of the Kings. It is a holy burial site for kings and powerful people. It is located on the west bank of the Nile River in Egypt. It is not far from the temple of Hatshepsut. Archaeologists found the mummy more than a century ago but it remained in a tomb until last spring. Then archaeologists took it to the Cairo Museum for testing.

Queen Hatshepsut ruled the ancient Egypt from about 1502 to 1482 B.C. The kingdom was very rich and powerful at that time. There were other female pharaohs in Egypt including Cleopatra and Nefertiti. However, Hatshepsut’s time in power was the longest and most successful. She established trade routes and built hundreds of monuments and temples throughout Egypt.

Although she was such a good pharaoh, her name never appeared in Egyptian history. Many historians believe that Tuthmose III, Hatshepsut’s stepson, removed her name from all historical records. He also ordered to destroy all monuments with Hatshepsut’s name on them. Probably he did it because she stole the throne from him. Finding the mummy of this powerful queen may give details about an important part of Egyptian history.

My favourite kind of holiday? It’s somewhere at the seaside for sure. I just love lying on a sunbed and sunbathing. I also enjoy swimming in the sea and playing in water. But I have to watch my children carefully when they are in the sea. You never know what ideas they may have. One moment they are perfectly safe, and the next they are in danger. Luckily they enjoy building sandcastles much more. There is always a contest about whose sandcastle will be the biggest or most beautiful. And when it’s too hot there? Then we sit in the shade under the palm trees and rest.

Last year my husband prepared a fantastic surprise for my birthday. He bought tickets for a three-week long holiday on a big cruiser called “Queen Elizabeth”. The ship sailed to the Caribbean. We stayed in a luxury balcony cabin with a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean. It was an all inclusive trip, so we didn’t have to worry about anything but have fun. We enjoyed the swimming pools, jacuzzi, tennis courts and the gym. We ate in great restaurants, went to the cinema, the theatre, and danced many nights at the disco. But it was the nicest when we finally had some privacy. Then we were both sitting on the balcony with evening drinks and looking at the sky full of stars. Lovely, memorable moments.

Many young people hate feeling bored on vacation. That’s why they choose different, sometimes risky activities. The more challenging they are, the more exciting it is. So lots of youngsters who like water sports go surfing, windsurfing or diving in the sea. Others prefer kayaking along rivers or on the lakes, which is fun, too. But what if someone doesn’t like water that much? Well, there’s always hiking or biking in the mountains, rock climbing or exploring the wildlife. For those young people who want to try something really exciting there are survival skills camps or activities such as parachuting or bungee jumping.

Me and my mates never stay in hotels, motels or guest houses. We prefer it more rough. So we take our tents and sleeping bags and stay on campsites. We choose some less crowded places where you can go swimming, fishing and build a campfire. When it gets hot we just sleep under the stars. But only when it’s dry because we hate mosquitoes. It’s fun to cook fresh fish in the campfire while sitting around it. We play the guitars, sing songs and drink beer, of course. Sadly, nowadays more and more people come in campers and it’s not so quiet and wild any more.

THE GRAND CANYON

The Grand Canyon is situated in the state of Arizona, USA. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was formed by over 70 million years of erosion from the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, about 18 miles wide and it measures over a mile at its deepest points.

Last year I went on the trip to visit that wonderful tourist destination. I arrived at the visitor centre where I watched a short movie. It was about the Grand Canyon National Park and the history of the canyon’s formation. Then I chose one hiking route and explored the area. While I was walking, I met some other tourists who were riding donkeys around the canyon’s ridges. They invited me to join them but I refused. I preferred visiting the place on my own.

Throughout my hiking expedition I visited several viewing points. I admired wonderful views and took panoramic photographs. After the trip I posted the best pictures on social media. My friends liked them very much. They advised me to send some of them to a photography competition organised by Discovery Channel. They were sure that I would get the first prize. I wasn’t so lucky but I had a lot of positive opinions about my photos. What’s more, it was a very important moment in my life as then I decided to take up photography professionally.
