In 1963, Bruce Reynolds organised a famous crime – the Great Train Robbery. He knew that the Royal Mail Train would carry £2.6 million. He decided to steal the money, but he couldn’t do it alone.
First, Reynolds carefully selected men for his gang. They were all experienced criminals. However, they had never robbed trains before. That’s why Reynolds asked another London gang to join them. Together, they spent months preparing for the robbery. They paid a lot of money to a railway worker to get the most important information for the plan – the train’s timetable. They also stole two Land Rovers from the nearby city to run away with the money after the crime.
The biggest problem for the gang was how to stop the train. Initially, they wanted to use dynamite, but it was too noisy. Then, they thought about blocking the railway track with trees, but it was too difficult. Instead, to stop the train, they decided to change the train signal.
When they did it, the train stopped, and the gang got inside. They had everything under control. They wore masks to hide their faces. They followed Reynolds’s instructions not to kill anyone. In fact, only the train driver got hurt. He was hit by one of the robbers. Luckily, nothing serious happened to him. The robbers stole around £2.6 million in cash and drove away.
After the robbery, the police worked hard to catch Reynolds’s gang. They checked every single piece of information from the local people. The most helpful clue came from someone who recognised Bruce Reynolds from a wanted poster. Thanks to that, Reynolds was soon arrested in his hideout. Unfortunately, some of the robbers ran away, and the police never found them. Most of the stolen cash was never found either, and we still don't know where it is today.

Today, in my blog "The Battlefield”, you’ll meet Audie Murphy, who was born in 1925 in Texas. When Audie was a teenager, his father fell down from a high building and died. After his father’s death, Audie worked very hard to buy food and clothes for his 11 brothers and sisters. But they still had too little money to live a good life. So, Audie decided to join the US Army.
Interestingly, when Audie tried to begin his military service for the first time, the army didn’t accept him. They thought that Audie was too young and too slim to be a soldier. But he didn’t give up. He was so determined to become a soldier that one month later he tried again. And this time, he didn’t tell the truth on the military documents. He changed the date of his birth to be one year older. Moreover, he ate a lot to be heavier. This time, he was big enough to join the US Army.
And, honestly, it was a good decision. As a soldier, Audie was selfless and patriotic. He showed it in the battle near the town of Holtzwihr, where Audie’s company was attacked by a big German unit. The situation looked very bad. There were no allies around to support the Americans. That’s why they decided to hide in the trenches and wait for help. But Audie didn't get scared. He was the only soldier who took a machine gun and started shooting at the enemy. And he was successful. The Germans panicked and left. The American soldiers were saved by a single person – the brave Audie.
After World War II, Audie left the army. He had many plans for his future. Firstly, he bought a ranch in Arizona. Then, he invested in some businesses all around the US. He also wrote songs, which were later recorded by well-known American artists. Finally, he moved to Hollywood and became a film star. He truly lived a full life after the war.

Coca-Cola was created in 1886 by Dr. John Pemberton, a pharmacist from the USA. When Dr. Pemberton first made Coca-Cola, he said it was a medicine to help with headaches and other health problems. That was why, at first, it was sold at a pharmacy for five cents a glass. Originally, Coca-Cola had some cocaine in it. It was about nine milligrams per portion. But they stopped using it in the drink in 1904. Now, Coca-Cola uses a version of the coca plant that doesn’t have any illegal substances in it.

Kopi luwak is an unusual type of coffee. It comes from Southeast Asia. This coffee is made in an interesting way. The production process starts with small animals called civet cats. These cats eat coffee beans. After some time, the beans come out in the animals’ poop. People collect the poop and wash the beans. Then, they roast them to make them brown and aromatic. Gatorade was created in 1965 by American scientists at the University of Florida to help its football team, the Florida Gators. The team’s coach, Dwayne Douglas, was worried about his players’ health in the hot Florida climate. They needed the drink to keep them hydrated when they trained outside. The original Gatorade taste was lemon-lime. But, over the years, Gatorade has offered other tastes such as fruit punch, orange, grape, and cool blue. Gatorade is now sold in over 80 countries worldwide and has become an important drink for athletes around the globe.

Another interesting drink is punch. It comes from India. The word “punch” means “five” in Hindi. It refers to the five ingredients of this drink: alcohol, sugar, lemon, water, and tea or spices. Punch was popularised in Europe in the 17th century, when British sailors brought it from their travels to India and Southeast Asia. It became a fashionable drink at women's meetings and tea parties. Soon, punch became globally known. Nowadays, different regions have their own variations of punch with local ingredients. For example, Caribbean punches often have rum and tropical fruits, while Americans use bourbon or whiskey.

There are many famous long-distance train journeys. Everybody knows the most elegant railway line in history, called the Orient Express. At first, it went from Paris to Istanbul. Then, in 1977, it got shorter and went from Paris to Vienna. In 2007, the line went from Strasbourg to Vienna. Finally, the Orient Express stopped operating in 2009. However, travelling by long-distance train is still popular. My personal favourite is the American night train called the Coast Starlight.
This line travels a total of over 2,200 km in almost 35 hours. It starts in Los Angeles, and its final station is in Seattle, around 250 kilometres away from Canada. So, this line goes from southern California to the far north-west of the USA.
There are a few reasons why I love the Coast Starlight. Firstly, I like the high standard of the line. The trains are clean and comfortable. The tickets are expensive but they include meals, so you don’t have to pay extra for them. And, between meals, you can leave the dining car and go to the viewing car to see the beautiful landscapes of the western USA.
I took this train when I was on holiday in the USA. The train left Los Angeles at 10 a.m. and, for the first twelve hours, it went along the coast. I looked at the Pacific Ocean until late at night. When I woke up in the morning, we were coming to Tacoma. This city is famous for a majestic volcano called Mount Rainier. I had always wanted to see it. So, as the train stopped at the station, I jumped out onto the platform to take some photos. I had to be quick, though, because I didn’t want the train to leave without me.
Then, the train reached Puget Sound. It is a long and wide area of water where a few rivers meet the Pacific Ocean. There were forests, islands, boats, and birds flying in the sky. I was even lucky enough to see a group of whales swimming close to the coast. I will never forget this image and the whole Coast Starlight journey.

Yesterday afternoon, London’s Soho became a scene of dramatic events. It all started with a group of builders. They were constructing a new office in the centre of Soho when they found an unusual object. It was a bomb. They alarmed the police, who came very quickly, as reported by Umika Verma, a receptionist at The Soho Hotel. Mrs. Verma told the CNN reporter, "The policemen came and told us that everyone, staff and hotel guests, had to evacuate in five minutes." Luckily, nobody was hurt. The bomb was taken from the building site and transported to a secure location where it was detonated.
