If you go to London, you can’t miss the big, red double-deck buses called the double-deckers in the streets. Over the years they have become the symbol of the capital of the UK. But few people know that the first double-deckers were used in 1828 in Paris, not in London. They looked quite different then and were called omnibuses. Double-deck omnibuses became popular in London some time later. Soon they were also introduced in Dublin, Ireland, but they were green there.

At first the omnibuses with double decks were quite small and carried 16 passengers, a driver and a conductor. The vehicles were pulled by horses and moved rather slowly. Still passengers liked them. Instead of walking long distances, people could travel across the city for just a few pennies. Passengers didn’t even mind the rather uncomfortable seats which were made of hard wood.

The first motor powered double-deckers appeared in London in the 1920s. Passengers got on the bus by using an open platform at the back and a bus conductor collected fares for the tickets. The back open platform was popular with passengers, but does not exist in buses any more. There were many dangerous accidents because passengers were running and jumping onto the platforms. Modern double-deckers have the main entrance door at the front. There are no ticket machines on buses – the driver takes fares, so entering the bus by passengers is slower.

Double-deckers were popular in many cities in Europe, and in the British colonies in Asia and Africa for many years. But since the end of the 20th century their numbers have become smaller, especially in India. Double-deckers are still common in Britain, Ireland, and Hong Kong. They are also popular in Singapore and Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

The night of our action was very dark. The helicopter took us to a place quite far from the village. We didn’t want the village people to hear it. The helicopter couldn’t land there because it was high in the mountains. Me and my soldiers slid down the ropes and landed safely. It was time to act. Our orders were clear: quietly enter the village, find the right house, enter it and kidnap the terrorist leader who would be inside. The man had come to the village for the wedding of his son – a 16-year-old boy. The big wedding party had already finished. Many people were drunk or tired and went to sleep. We didn’t have much time, so we moved fast.

I was worried that the village dogs would start barking and alarm everybody. But the dogs were quiet. Then we saw many armed terrorists patrolling the village. They were protecting the place, and especially the house where their leader was staying. We didn’t expect such strong protection. Some of my soldiers had to eliminate the men on patrols quietly. They used knives and guns with silencers. It happened fast. Then me and three of my men got into the house. We attacked and killed four more terrorists and went into the room where their leader was. He wasn’t sleeping anymore and started shooting at us. Next he tried to run away. We caught him and gave him a shot of medicine. The man couldn’t move, so we tied him and took with us to the helicopter pick-up place. We got back to the base without any problems. The successful action was over.

Andy Warhol grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the son of a construction worker. His birth name was Andrew Warhola. When he was 8 years old, he got seriously ill. When he was at home getting better after his illness, his mother, an artist, taught him to draw. He was a quiet and shy child, but loved drawing, photography, and movies.

After graduating from college, Andy moved to New York in 1959 because he wanted to be an artist. Andy soon became very successful. On one of his first jobs his name in the credits was spelled "Warhol" instead of "Warhola". Andy liked the name and decided to keep it.

Over the next ten years Andy won prizes for his work and was famous for his unusual style. However, Andy wanted to do more with his art. He wanted to do something new and different. In 1961 Andy came up with the idea of using mass-produced commercial goods in his art. He called it Pop Art. He used commercial images and reproduced them over and over. One early example of this was a series on Campbell's Soup cans. In one painting he had two hundred Campbell's soup cans repeated over and over.

Andy soon became a celebrity. He opened a new studio called "The Factory". He worked on his art there, but he also had large parties for rich and famous people. It became one of the cool places to be in New York City. Celebrities often met there.

Andy was a different kind of artist. He loved art but he also wanted to be rich and famous. Some artists criticised him because he made art to earn money. His paintings have become expensive, too. One of his portraits called Eight Elvises sold for $100 million in 2008. But Andy also brought art to common people. He mass produced prints of his art so everyone could buy it.

Machu Picchu was a city of the Inca Empire. Machu Picchu means "Old Mountain" in the language of the Inca. It is sometimes called the "Lost City" because the Spanish never found the city when they came to South America in the 1500s. Today the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

One of the most fascinating things about Machu Picchu is its location. It sits 8,000 feet above the sea level on a mountain in the Andes in southern Peru. On three sides of the city there are cliffs that drop over 1,400 feet to the Urubamba River. At the fourth side of the city there is a high mountain. It is located around 50 miles from Cuzco, the capital city of the Inca Empire.

Most of the buildings are made of stones. Thanks to that the buildings did not get destroyed during earthquakes. The Inca didn't use machines and didn’t have animals. People did all the hard work. It took hundreds of workers to move the large stones around the place.

In July 1911, an explorer Hiram Bingham rediscovered the city. He wrote a book about it called The Lost City of the Incas.
