One of the most amazing stories in air travel is about a flight attendant, Vesna Vulović, from JAT Flight 367. On January 26, 1972, she welcomed the passengers flying from Copenhagen to her home city of Belgrade. Vesna really wanted to come back home because she was exhausted. Unfortunately, nobody got to Belgrade. The tragedy happened over Prague in Czechoslovakia when the plane unexpectedly went down.
There were 28 people on board. 27 of them died. Only Vesna survived. How did it happen? She didn’t have any parachute, because there was no time to put it on. She simply fell from the plane into the trees and then onto the ground covered with snow. At that time, the world record for a fall was from 6000 meters, but Vesna fell from 10,160 meters! This is much higher than Mount Everest, which is 8,848 meters high! That is why you can find her name in the Guinness World Records.
A man who found Vesna in the woods called an ambulance. Luckily, she was alive but she couldn’t move. When she woke up in the hospital, she was shocked. She forgot the day of the accident. She remembered very few things – her name, the fact that she had no husband and no kids. Yet, she wasn’t alone in the hospital. When her parents found out about the accident, they came to Prague, rented a room in a hotel, and visited Vesna every day.
In the meantime, the services tried to find the reason for the plane catastrophe. The weather conditions, the condition of the machine’s engine and the bomb theory were checked. Finally, after a few months, the police gave an answer. According to the official report, a bomb exploded on board the plane.
After the catastrophe, Vesna became very famous. She even had a meeting with her idol, Paul McCartney! He couldn’t believe that the woman he was talking to was the survivor of the highest fall without a parachute. He was also impressed by her personality. Vesna was really modest. Despite her fame, she led a simple life. She continued to work for the airline, but she never flew again.
